Abstract
Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS) has touched every race, gender, age, socio-economic class, sexual preference and continent around the globe. Yet, African Americans are still disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. The burden of the epidemic of HIV/AIDS among the African American community has propelled the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reassess current prevention interventions targeted toward African Americans. HIV/AIDS has always posed a unique challenge to the field of public health, due to the lack of a vaccine or cure. Therefore, interventions must aim at changing the behavior; however, this must be done in a cost-effective but an efficacious way. This paper will examine current behavioral intervention programs that target the African American population through education to engage in healthier sexual behaviors and empower them to sustain healthy sexual behaviors to reduce their risk of HIV infection.
