The Effectiveness of Lower Limb Injury Prevention in College-Aged Female Soccer Players: An Intervention Study
Abstract :
For the last three years I have served as a member of the NCAA Division III Marymount University Women’s Soccer team- during this time I have continually witnessed a high volume of injury among my teammates, as well as a season ending personal injury. Mostly, I have observed the same issues season to season; soft tissue injuries of the lower limbs, including muscular strains and ligament sprains, ranging in severity. The most pertinent research questions that I will explore through this study are: ● Why do these injuries seem to be a recurring problem for the Marymount Women’s Soccer squad? ● What is the difference with regards to such injuries in male versus female athletes? ● What previous research has helped to reverse this type of injury situation in athletic populations? And, ● Are such injuries preventable? This thesis aims to address these questions via research into the etiology of soft tissue injury in female athletes as well as via a physical intervention that aims to prevent injury and improve performance.
